OUR SILENCE IS LOUD is a new film by Iviwe Jonas, Abenathi Gaba and Lonwabo Magqazolo - three Grade 11 learners from Makhaza, Khayelitsha. As we celebrate Women’s Month this August, we acknowledge the struggles that women face every day.
South Africa is known for its alarmingly high rates of gender-based violence, with the statistics revealing 42 289 rapes reported in 2019/2020 and 7 749 sexual assaults. This translates into about 115 rapes a day. The country ranks among the highest in the world for incidents of rape. Many cases of gender-based violence, including rape, go unreported, and the actual numbers are higher than what is officially documented.
The learners passionately encourage the audience to break the silence on gender-based violence and take action towards creating a more equitable and secure society. Their advocacy inspires audiences to become activists for ending gender-based violence and promoting gender equality.
