Signs of a Changing Climate was made by Grade 10 learners from IkamvaYouth Khayelitsha. The film looks at how climate change increasingly affects underserved communities, moving between the science of rising global temperatures and the environmental changes visible in everyday life, including reduced tree cover, air pollution and increasing climate vulnerability.
Extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and flooding disproportionately affect residents of informal settlements, resulting in repeated displacement, lost belongings and the ongoing work of rebuilding homes and livelihoods. Through conversations with community members and educators, the filmmakers explore the broader structural conditions behind these impacts, including unemployment, urban planning, and the relationship between communities and local government.
Thank you to all the learners who contributed to the project, and to the teachers at Sizimisele High School for sharing knowledge and perspectives on climate change.
