Echoes of Hope: Personal Stories of Living With HIV is a short film by grade 10 learners from Simanyene High School in Strand, living in Asanda village. In 2022, Stats SA reported an estimated HIV prevalence rate of 13.9% among South Africans. This means about one in seven people are living with HIV. Many people living with HIV internalise the stigma they face, leading to negative self-image and emotional distress. HIV-related discrimination and stigma stem from misunderstandings about the virus and its transmission. With proper treatment and support, individuals with HIV can lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
This film was created in collaboration with Dr. Hannah Hussey from the Cape Town Systematic Healthcare Action Research Project (C-SHARP), supported by facilitators from Nomzamo and Bishop Lavis.
