Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major cause of pregnancy-related complications and deaths, especially for mothers living with HIV. “Mothers At Risk” is a short film that follows the personal stories of four women from Khayelitsha in Cape Town, South Africa, from diagnosis to recovery, highlighting the physical and emotional burdens of (TB) while preparing for motherhood. One woman shares her experience of losing a lung, while another reflects on balancing her mental health with TB treatment during pregnancy. Diagnosing TB during pregnancy is challenging, making timely treatment essential for both mother and baby.
This short film was created in collaboration with A/Prof Emma Kalk, a Clinical Epidemiologist and director at the Centre for Integrated Data and Epidemiological Research (CIDER), who oversees maternal and child health projects.
