Silencing Stigma: Breathe Without Shame was shot and edited by young high school learners from IkamvaYouth Khayelitsha in Cape Town. The film focuses on tuberculosis (#TB) and on sharing personal stories from people with proximity to the disease. It dives into how people contract TB, its symptoms, and the realities of navigating TB. A key story highlights the challenges of TB during pregnancy and the difficulty of taking TB treatment alongside pregnancy supplements. Side effects such as nausea can make sticking to treatment even harder. The film also looks into the risks of interrupting treatment during pregnancy and the risk of transmission to the baby. Through these stories, the learners push the importance of completing treatment, reducing TB transmission, and confronting the stigma that still surrounds the disease even today.
