The track features in a documentary produced by IkamvaYouth high school learners from Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s most TB- and HIV-affected communities, as part of our Learner Doccies programme. Learner Doccies is built on the premise that meaningful engagement with infectious disease requires more than information.
Young people engage directly with local biomedical research, clinical trials, and transmission dynamics, and produce documentary films that translate that science into compelling human narratives. The work sits at the intersection of poverty, stigma, mental health, and sexual violence. The structural conditions that determine who gets sick, who gets treated, and who gets a say. Music is integral to that storytelling.
We collaborate with artists from Khayelitsha and across Cape Town, integrating original tracks into the learners' films and producing music videos in return. It is an exchange rooted in the same principle as the programme itself. The language to address disease, its cost, its stigma, and its structural roots belongs to the communities who live with it.
