Sugar Struggle: A Journey with Diabetes is a short film created by a group of Grade 10 students from IkamvaYouth Masiphumelele, Cape Town. It explores the real life stories of people living with diabetes and shows what it’s like to deal with this condition every day.
In South Africa alone, more than 4.2 million people between 20 and 79 years old are living with diabetes, according to the International Diabetes Federation. Living with diabetes can also increase the risk of TB. The film doesn’t just explain the different types of diabetes and the treatments—whether taking medication or injecting insulin daily—but also shares the ups and downs that come with it.
This film isn’t just about the facts. It’s about personal journeys. From the moment of diagnosis to the ongoing treatment, “Sugar Struggle” explores the human side of living with diabetes, showing the challenges, fears, and small daily victories along the way.
