The Long Walk to Clinics is a short documentary created by Grade 9 learners from the IkamvaYouth Khayelitsha branch. It explores the crucial role community healthcare workers play in supporting local health. Through conversations with healthcare workers and Khayelitsha residents, the film brings together diverse voices who share experiences, insights, and concerns.
The stories highlight the realities of community-based care, including long journeys to clinics, stigma and misunderstandings among residents, safety risks when delivering medication door-to-door, and the challenging circumstances many patients endure, such as poverty and food insecurity.
Community healthcare workers play a vital role in South Africa’s health system, especially in areas with limited access to clinics and hospitals. However, their essential work and the challenges they face often go unnoticed.
